3 Tips to Take Care of Your Braces

Go The Extra Smile!

Garlock Orthodontics
February 22, 2021

It is a big deal to get braces. Not only is it a lifelong investment, but it also requires extra caring and attention to keep the braces working and intact. It can be even more difficult with kids who aren’t too excited about brushing their teeth regularly.

However, the following tips can help you take care of your or your kids’ braces.

  • Use Forks, Knives, and Spoons: It can be tough to get an adolescent to use utensils to eat at all times, but it will be worth it. Biting into food pushes it up behind and between the braces, causing it to get stuck. If the food is particularly hard, it can also damage the brackets and wires. Using utensils prevents this from happening, and can even be safe to eat otherwise restricted foods such as burgers and pizzas once in a while.
  • Eat Chocolate: This one is especially for those kids and adults who have a sweet tooth. Sticky sweets, hard candies, and tacky gum can damage the braces and teeth. As chocolate dissolves quickly and doesnโ€™t usually get stuck in the mouth, it is a much better option to fulfill your sugar cravings. However, chocolates are still high in sugar and calories, so only consume them in moderation.
  • Listen To Your Orthodontist: Ultimately, you need to listen to everything your orthodontist says. The treatment is designed to align the teeth as quickly and safely as possible. However, if the orthodontistโ€™s advice is ignored, it will only prolong the treatment. Listen to what they have to say and encourage your kid to follow it as closely as possible.

If you’re looking to get braces and reside in Centennial, Foxfield, or Ponderosa East, visit Dr. David Garlock Garlock Orthodontics for a consultation now.

Proper Diet Can Make a Difference

By avoiding sticky and hard foods, you can prevent damage to your braces and teeth. Opting for healthier snack options like fruits, vegetables, and nuts can also help maintain good oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment. Remember, the better care you take of your braces, the quicker and more successful your treatment will be.

If you're unsure of what foods to eat or avoid with braces, don't hesitate to ask your orthodontist for guidance. They can provide you with a list of recommended foods that will be safe for your braces and won't interfere with your treatment plan.

Regular Check-Ups are Essential

Scheduling regular appointments with your orthodontist is crucial for monitoring the progress of your treatment and making any necessary adjustments to your braces. These check-ups allow your orthodontist to ensure that your braces are working effectively and that your teeth are moving into their proper positions.

During these appointments, your orthodontist will also check for any issues or concerns that may arise, such as loose or broken brackets, and provide solutions to address them promptly. By staying on top of your check-ups, you can help ensure that your braces are doing their job correctly and that your treatment plan stays on track.
