Keeping your teeth clean while wearing braces can be
difficult, but it’s more important during orthodontic treatment than ever
before! Your braces make a great hiding spot for food particles, plaque
buildup, and bacteria. Staying on top of your oral hygiene during orthodontic
treatment can help avoid dental cavities, gum disease, chronic bad breath, and
discoloration of the teeth.
4 Tips for Keeping Teeth Clean While Wearing Braces
Brush after each meal – When you’re wearing braces, we recommend brushing after each meal. The longer you let food particles build up around the brackets, the more damage the bacteria will do. If you can’t brush, at least try to rinse with water after meals!
Clean one tooth at a time – When brushing while you have braces on, take your time and brush each individual tooth. We recommend spending 5-10 seconds on each tooth.
Don’t forget to use fluoride – Always make sure to use fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash. Fluoride helps prevent cavities, which is important to do during orthodontic treatment.
Use a floss threader – Many of our patients have no trouble using regular floss, but others find it to be difficult. In these situations, we recommend using a floss threader, which can help you get floss through the braces and teeth.

Importance of Regular Check-Ups
During orthodontic treatment, it is crucial to schedule regular check-ups with your orthodontist. These appointments allow your orthodontist to monitor the progress of your treatment, make any necessary adjustments to your braces, and ensure that your teeth and gums are staying healthy. Regular check-ups also give you the opportunity to ask any questions or address any concerns you may have about your treatment.
Additionally, your orthodontist may recommend professional cleanings to help remove any stubborn plaque or tartar that may have accumulated around your braces. These cleanings can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease, ensuring that your smile stays healthy and beautiful throughout your orthodontic treatment.
Maintaining a Healthy Diet
What you eat can have a significant impact on the health of your teeth and gums, especially while wearing braces. Foods that are high in sugar or starch can stick to your braces and teeth, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. It is important to avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods that can damage your braces or make it difficult to clean your teeth properly.
Instead, focus on eating a balanced diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can also help wash away food particles and bacteria, keeping your mouth clean and fresh. By maintaining a healthy diet, you can support the health of your teeth and gums during orthodontic treatment.
