7 Tips for Properly Cleaning Invisalign Trays

Go The Extra Smile!

Garlock Orthodontics
February 10, 2020

There are a number of benefits of using Invisalign aligners for your orthodontic treatment. However, if you’re not properly caring for your aligner trays, you’ll start to notice problems or feel embarrassed about the odor. Additionally, improperly cleaned Invisalign trays can begin to show discoloration.

7 Tips for Cleaning Invisalign Trays

Below are a few tips on how to properly clean and care for you Invisalign trays:

  1. Soak your aligners daily – We recommend soaking your trays every day, either in Invisalign cleaning crystals or denture cleaner. This helps them to look and smell their best and can loosen potential bacteria or plaque buildup. Simply rinse them off before placing them back in your mouth.
  2. Clean the trays every morning – Bacteria can build up on the aligners while you’re sleeping. This means that your morning dental hygiene routine is very important. Make sure you thoroughly clean your trays every morning and evening.
  3. Don’t leave trays in the open – If aligners are not in your mouth, they should be in their storage case. If you leave them in the open, you risk making them susceptible to the bacteria in the open air.
  4. Avoid using dyes or fragrances on your aligners – Avoid using scented or dyed toothpaste or soap on your Invisalign trays. They can cause discoloration or an unpleasant taste.
  5. Rinse aligners each time you remove them – Aside from your morning and evening routine, you should also be rinsing your trays every time you remove them. This prevents bacteria and plaque buildup.
  6. Don’t eat food or drink while wearing aligners – The only approved thing to consume when wearing Invisalign aligners is water. All other food and drinks must be consumed while the aligners were taken out.
  7. Brush and floss before putting the trays back in – Making sure your teeth and gums are free from plaque and bacteria is a great way to keep your Invisalign trays clean. Make sure you’re brushing and flossing twice a day.

Preventing Discoloration of Invisalign Trays

Discoloration of Invisalign trays can be unsightly and may make you feel self-conscious about wearing them. To prevent discoloration, it is important to follow a strict cleaning routine. Make sure to soak your trays daily in cleaning crystals or denture cleaner to remove any bacteria or plaque buildup. Additionally, avoid using toothpaste or soap that contains dyes or fragrances, as these can stain the trays over time. By following these steps, you can help keep your Invisalign trays looking clear and transparent.

Another tip to prevent discoloration is to avoid consuming anything other than water while wearing your aligners. Food and drink can easily stain the trays, leading to discoloration. It is also important to brush and floss your teeth before putting the trays back in, as plaque and bacteria on your teeth can transfer to the trays, causing them to become discolored. By following these preventive measures, you can maintain the appearance of your Invisalign trays throughout your treatment.

Taking Care of Your Aligners for a Healthy Smile

Properly caring for your Invisalign trays is essential for maintaining good oral hygiene and overall health. In addition to preventing discoloration, cleaning your aligners regularly helps to prevent bacteria buildup, which can lead to odor and other oral health issues. Remember to soak your trays daily, clean them every morning, and rinse them each time you remove them. By following these steps, you can ensure that your Invisalign trays remain clean and odor-free.

Furthermore, avoiding leaving your trays in the open air and refraining from eating or drinking while wearing them can help prevent bacteria from accumulating on the trays. Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day is also crucial for maintaining good oral hygiene during your Invisalign treatment. By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can take care of your aligners and enjoy a healthy smile throughout your orthodontic journey.
