Orthodontic Retention
Aurora, CO
Congratulations, you have reached a milestone in your orthodontic treatment! Our patients begin the retention period of their orthodontic care when braces are removed. This phase is both exciting and extremely important. A period of time is needed to stabilize the entire mouth once the teeth have been moved into their desired positions. Up to this point, it has been a team effort, but now the retention phase is up to you.
What To Expect
Initially, your retainers may feel bulky and somewhat affect your speech. In a few days, once the tongue adapts, your speech will return to normal. The day after you receive your retainers, your teeth may also feel a bit sore, however, this will resolve quickly with continuous wear.
How To Maintain A Beautiful Smile
- Wear your retainers as prescribed.
- Do not let your retainers get damaged or bent (“In the case, or on your face!”). If you experience prolonged irritation of the gums, lips, cheeks, or tongue, do not attempt to adjust the retainer yourself, but call for an appointment. If your retainer is damaged, call immediately for an appointment.
- Do not leave your retainer within reach of pets.
- Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush. Use cold, not hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque and eliminates odors.
- Visit your general dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings.
- Always bring your retainers to your appointments so that we can check the fit and make any necessary adjustments.
If you do not wear your retainers as instructed, your teeth will move. If you miss a night, be sure to wear your retainer full time for a day or so. Make sure your retainer is completely in, this may cause your teeth to be sore, but they should realign. If they don’t, or if your retainer is lost or broken, please call us immediately for a replacement.
