Halloween marks the beginning of the holiday season that’s the roughest on your dental health! Thanks to the sugary candy corn and sticky caramels and taffy, it’s hard to stay away from unhealthy choices in the Halloween season!
While we’re not at all suggesting that you stay away from candy on Halloween, but you should keep in mind that moderation is key. Unfortunately, most people are filling your child’s candy bucket with the worst possible candy choices.
According to the American Heart Association, children should only consume between 3-8 teaspoons of added sugar per day. This is equal to 12-32 grams. When considering that a single serving of candy corn contains 28 grams of sugar, you’ll see that this goes over your child’s sugar limit all by itself.
Healthier Halloween Candy Treats
Instead of filling trick or treaters’ buckets with sugary, sticky candy, consider one of the healthier options below:
- Mini granola bars
- Mini bags of crackers or pretzels
- Crayons
- Bags of un-popped popcorn
- Raisins
- Stickers
- Fruit leather or fruit snacks
- Whistles or small toys
The parents of your trick-or-treaters will be thankful for the healthier Halloween treat options and the children will enjoy a unique treat instead of the usual candy treats!
